Sephardi Salon Series: An Evening of Storytelling with Guita Sazan and Adam Heffez
About the event
Join us for a special evening delving into the personal journeys of two Middle Eastern Jews. We will begin with a book talk and reading of Mirrors on Fire, a poignant memoir by Guita Sazan. It is the coming-of-age story of an idealistic Jewish girl in revolutionary Iran, developing a personal but controversial purpose during a historic moment. Her journey led to unexpected and miraculous love, resulting in an inconceivable personal encounter with Ayatollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic revolution. We will then hear from Adam Heffez as he brings out of the shadows the timid and dying vestiges of Jewish life in the Middle East. Today, we may be in the very last days of Jewish civilizations that date back to biblical times in Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, and elsewhere. This is a story of Jews who live today in places where one would least expect to find them, and Adam’s own “reverse exodus.” Sephardic refreshments will be served.
